Sister Lucy

Sister Lucy, a kind-hearted and dedicated woman, has been working with Hla Day since its inception. Her group specializes in fabric-based products, including Hla Day’s popular Rakhine longyi fabric Gatsby Cap. They also craft plush toys, with Sister Lucy known for her remarkable patience and skill in creating small, detailed items.

Based at a church in Mhawbi Township, Sister Lucy runs a free, year-long sewing training program for young women and girls interested in building a livelihood as tailors. Each year, she trains six to eight women. Some graduates go on to become tailors in their hometowns, while others stay on to work with her.

Beyond technical training, Sister Lucy supports the women with materials, financial assistance from Hla Day product sales, and invaluable emotional support and mentorship. Her efforts help women not only earn an income but also gain confidence and independence.

Today, Sister Lucy runs a small sewing studio at the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition Convent, where she continues to train young women from diverse religious and educational backgrounds. Her mission is simple yet powerful: to provide women with the skills and support they need to build better lives for themselves and their families.
