Golden Queens

Established in 2009 by Médicins du Monde (MdM), Golden Queens (GDQ) is a group of gay men and transgender individuals whose mission is to reduce the stigma and discrimination that gay men and transgender people are still largely confronted with. To achieve this goal, GDQ objectives include: improving community capacity in order to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS, providing basic support to people hospitalized in emergency situations, and establishing microfinance and incomegenerating activities to support community needs.

Profits from the sales have made it possible for people requiring medical treatment to access reusable hospital supplies, such as bedding and food utensils. Funds also support health education, access to microfinance, travel expenses and provision of food and care for people who are imprisoned.

Charcoal is a member of GDQ and has been the main artisan continuing to produce products throughout COVID-19 and the ongoing challenges in Myanmar. She also works as a counselor at TOP Center Myanmar — a nationwide, community-led organization that empowers marginalized communities to claim their rights and dignity and live healthy lives.
